Miscellaneous Information
Daylight attack on a small town in Lower Saxony |
Eugene was born on 11 April 1923 at Waterford, New York. Both parents were deceased by the time of Eugene's enlistment and his father had been a farmer born in Massachusetts and his mother in Canada, place unknown. Eugene listed his brother Edmund Henry as his next of kin on his enlistment papers. Eugene came from a large family, with brothers Alfred, Arthur, Ephraim, and three more all deceased: Leo aged 2, Wilfred 19 and a newborn. There were also five sisters Rosalin, Lea, Ida, Rita and one other. The schools Eugene attended were Waterford Public 1931-1938 (Entrance) and Cohoes High School 1938-1940 (Machine Course). He then attended Troy Trade School where he underwent a 300 hours course with Rototiller & Co., Troy, New York (a manufacturer of rotary tillers- now Troy-Bilt Inc). Eugene enjoyed baseball, fishing and hunting, also gun collecting. Note that he is sometimes said to have hailed from Hawaii but this was where his brother was situated. In fact he was from New York. |
He enlisted on 21 April 1941 and embarked for the U.K. on 23 October 1941. After arriving at 3PRC on 4 November 1941 he went to 7 AGS. 29 April 1942, 16 OTU 5 May 1942, 207 Squadron 7 September 1942. Eugene was only aged nineteen when he lost his life. |
